Free ESX Viewer - Read Any Xactimate .esx File
Last updated: September 8, 2026
Read-only and fully in your browser: the file never leaves this machine.
Your pasted XML is saved in this browser only, so you can pick up where you left off. A file you choose is read here and never saved. Nothing is sent to ESXPress. Clear it when you finish on a shared computer.
What an .esx file contains
An ESX file is the Xactimate estimate format: folders, line items with CAT|SEL codes, quantities, prices, notes, and the project metadata. The .esx you receive from an adjuster or converter carries the whole estimate, not a scanned page. The viewer exposes the element structure the file carries; Xactimate itself remains the tool that opens, edits, and reprices.
Why you might get one without Xactimate
Adjusters, carriers, and roofers with licensed copies send .esx files routinely. On the receiving side you often only need to read it: confirm the line items, the prices, the totals - before you answer the carrier or hand the file to your own estimator.
Read-only is the safe mode
A viewer never changes your file. Any edit happens on a paid path: upload the scope PDF and convert, or reprice with the reprice tool. That is what makes a free viewer safe to use on a claim file you were only sent copies of.
What to do next
- Have the scope as a PDF? Convert PDF to ESX - it becomes an .esx with the PDF's prices kept as the price.
- Need current numbers? The reprice explainer covers why the file reprices on import.
- What is inside the format? What an ESX file is explains it end to end.
Limitations
Sketches, drawings, and calculated items require Xactimate. ESXPress opens the numbers; Xactimate is still the drawing tool. Structural checks for a file that will not import live in the free ESX Validator.
